They started the 2008 season with an upset win over Virginia Tech last Saturday.

Then, Ohio State overcame a very slow start against Ohio University but ended up winning that game 26-14.

Another team, that looked like it was going to get beat at home, was Notre Dame. The Irish were at home hosting San Diego State, who had just lost their opening game against Cal Poly of all teams and the Aztecs led the Irish 13-7 into the 4th quarter. The Aztecs had a chance to put the game away for good but they would fumble the ball in the end zone on what looked like a sure touchdown. Notre Dame would turn that into a touchdown of their own to take a 14-13 lead and would add another touchdown late to avoid one of the biggest upsets of the weekend.

Another couple of teams who avoided being upset were #20 Wake Forest and #17 South Florida. Wake Forest needed a last second field goal to beat Mississippi 30-28. Mississippi had scored a go ahead touchdown with just a minute to go in the fourth quarter, but Wake Forest had just enough time to get into FG range to win the ball game. South Florida needed overtime to defeat Central Florida 31-24. Central Florida had tied up the ball game 24-24 but South Florida still had enough time to win with a last second field goal at the end of regulation, but kicker Delbert Alvarado would hook a 42 yarder wide and the game would go into overtime.

In a controversial ending, Washington was charged with excessive celebration on a touchdown that pulled the Huskies to within 1 of BYU. The Huskies were backed up 15 yards and their extra point attempt was blocked and #15 BYU would hold on for a 28-27 victory. That's a call that is going to be questioned around the water coolers come Monday morning.

It's been a fun season already and we're only 2 weeks in....what else could happen?

Top 5 teams go unchallenged

On Saturday, Georgia, USC, Ohio State, Florida and Oklahoma went unchallenged in their season openers. Though that's not a surprise to the average fan, none of these top 5 teams really had a tough opponent in Week 1, 4 of those 5 teams played their openers at home. Which got me to thinking, if a team is going to prove they're deserving of a National Championship, without a shadow of a doubt, shouldn't they schedule tougher non-conference opponents?

Let's look at all five of these teams and who they played Week 1:

#1 Georgia (Georgia Southern 7-4 in 2007) Home
#2 Ohio State (Youngstown State 7-4 in 2007) Home
#3 USC (Virginia 9-4 in 2007) Road
#4 Oklahoma (Chattanooga 2-9 in 2007) Home
#5 Florida (Hawaii 12-1 in 2007) Home

Instead of scheduling lower division schools such as Georgia Southern, Youngstown State and Chattanooga, why can't Georgia schedule a team like Texas or USC? Because these upper echilon teams want easy wins on their record before they face their own conference, they don't want a couple of easy wins, just to make their record look a little better.

So while they're schedule lower division opponents, mid-majors such as Fresno State are scheduling Rutgers (road), Wisconsin (home) and UCLA (road) and they'll have to win all 3 games plus run through their conference schedule unscathed just to be considered for a BCS bid. Even then, however, people will still say they don't belong in the BCS. They said the same thing about Boise State until they took down Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.

Virginia Tech the 2nd Top 25 team to fall in week 1

Another Top 25 team has fallen. This morning, it was the Pitt Panthers dropping their home opener 27-17 to Bowling Green.

Now #17 Virginia Tech would lose their opener to East Carolina 27-22. East Carolina came up with a huge blocked punt that was returned 27 yards for a TD by T.J. Lee with just 1:52 left in the 4th quarter, stunning the Hokies.

Will this be the last Top 25 team to be upset today? I guess well see. If there's two games you should turn your tv to this afternoon, #9 Clemson plays host to #24 Alabama and #6 Missouri will be home to take on #20 Illinois. Texas Rangers' outfielder Josh Hamilton.

OOOOOOOOOO... first swing is an absolute blast to right center for his first of the night. Ladies and gentlemen, he's winning this thing. With that kind of blast...this is over.

OOOOOOOOO...HOLY COW!!!! Josh Hamilton has left the building! JOSH HAMILTON HAS LEFT THE BUILDING, LITERALLY! He hit the back wall in right field! WOW! Here is your show and this is the reason I Tivo'd this.

OOOOOOO...dead center....SEE YA! # 3 for Josh Hamilton.

Line drive to left...yeah he's got enough for # 4. It's not a blast but it counts.

WHOAOOOO!!!! HE HIT THE JUMBO TRON IN RIGHT CENTER!!!! That's easily 500+ feet. Side note, when he hit the back wall in right, it was measured at 502 ft.

OOOOOOO...# 6, this is over, I'm telling you, it's over. Josh is putting on a show! Last blast measured at 504 ft. WOW!

WOOOOOOOOOO.....Hamilton with # 7 and Edison Volquez just ran over and put the briefcase on top of home plate and called it off.

HERE GOES ANOTHER ONE!!!! # 8 and he's tied with Berkman and Morneau...

Hamilton has 6 home runs and still 4 outs to use. WE HAVE A NEW LEADER...# 9 out to right field, Hamilton leads.

OOOOOOOOOOO...are you kidding me. Upper deck in the right field for # 10! Milton Bradley comes up and gives him a towl and a massage...too funny!

Ladies and gentlemen, he has 10 HR's with still 4 outs to use

THERE GOES # 11! Hamilton is just showing off, this isn't fair. What a show he's putting on at Yankee Stadium!

There goes another one to right center...he's not done yet! 12 HR's and we're still counting.

Right center he he comes....# 13 and with that shot he passed Alex Rios' 12 HR's from the first round last year.

OOOOOOOOOO....# 14 and onto the walk way splitting right center and the right field stands. 14 HR's and 3 outs left.

There goes another one to right center...# 15 up to the jumbo tron again!

Dead center...does it have enough on it!? YEAH BABY! # 16 for Josh Hamilton!

dead center again and he just hit it half way up the bleachers in center?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? # 17 and by far the longest bomb tonight!

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO....HOLY COW!! # 18 and 518 ft to the upper deck in right center.

# 19 FOR HAMILTON!!! ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!

THERE GOES # 20 TO THE JUMBO TRON!!!!

# 21...NO WAY AM I WATCHING THIS!!! David Ortiz just walked off and waved goodbye...that's hilarious. This is what this competition is all about, for these players to have a great time together watching this.

# 22...THIS IS HISTORY IN THE MAKING...UN BE LIEVABLE. No way did I expect Hamilton to do what he's doing tonight. Absolutely incredible.

There goes # 23! I should stop typing

OK, that's it, there's no way this is real...# 24 for Hamilton and he still has 2 outs left.

Hamilton has tied for the most EVER in a first round of the Home Run Derby...the next one and he is the All Time leader.

NEW ALL TIME LEADER...# 25 but barely reaching the right field seats...is he running out of steam?

OOOOOOOO...ok, this is incredible....#26 for Josh Hamilton! There is a reason he was the main event for the first round because they knew he was going to do something special. His BP pitcher, Clay Counsil is 71 years old, what a story he's going to be able to tell his grandkids. Unbelievable!

There goes another one....# 27, where he is going to stop? Can he get to 30? This record is going to stand for a LOOOOONG time. No way anyone tops what Josh Hamilton has done tonight

Center field to the deepest part of the park...DID HE GET ENOUGH!? YEAH HE DID! # 28!

He's getting to 30...now it's not even a question.

He got an out..unreal...how many was that with 8 outs? He sits on 28, can he get to 30 with 1 out left? The bigger question is, does he have enough left to keep going into the 2nd round? He's spent a lot of energy.

Couldn't quite get to 30...but what a performance by Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers...one for the ages and was there a more appropriate place to do it in than Yankee Stadium?

Braun struggles at the start, but finishes hot with 7 HR's

Ryan Braun, the favorite of some and a definite power threat from the Milwaukee Brewers.

His first swing a rocket line drive but foul...you wonder how fast those balls are screaming into the stands.

Braun starting off slow...no home runs and he's used 6 outs already. He needs to get rolling if he's going to stay in this.

There goes # 1 for Braun to right center. For a right hander, that's tough in this stadium but Braun is on the board.

# 2 on the way out to left field, so Braun gets his second but has a long way to go to stay in.

An upper deck shot to left for # 3, is Braun starting to find his stroke with just 3 outs left?

There goes # 4 for Braun, just clearing the fence in left. Not flashy, but it gets it done.

Did he get enough for # 5...you bet, off the facing of the upper deck in left. He's tied Evan Longoria.

There goes a deep bomb in left for # 6...look out Uggla and Sizemore, you have company.

Uh oh! Look out Berkman and Morneau..there goes # 7 to right center...don't look now but Braun is finding his way up the leader board.

Braun finishes 1 short of Lance Berkman and Justin Morneau, your leaders, but he finished with a flurry and is looking to advance into the 2nd round.

Just when you thought Uggla and Sizemore may have done enough, 3 guys have already passed them. Could we see a swing off before the night is done?

Justin Morneau surprises, ties Berkman for 1st

Justin Morneau will follow Lance Berkman's power displayed finish.

Morneau just missed his first to the right of the foul pole in right.

He didn't miss that one for his first of the night to right field, about 15 rows deep. Note...he needs a better BP pitcher, he's almost as bad as Utley's.

OOOOOOO...Morneau with a bomb to right field for # 2. That was a heck of shot! The one thing I notice about Justin is he's much more patient than the rest of the field has been. A good strategy.

Morneau with another blast, this one to deep right center for # 3. There goes # 4 for Justin, he's just 2 behind Utley and Uggla.

There goes # 5 to the upper deck in right...watch out Lance Berkman

# 6...tied with Uggla and Sizemore and still has 3 outs left to use. Hey Lance, I'd look over your shoulder because here comes Morneau.

OOOOOOO... # 7 to the upper deck in right and he's right on the heels of Lance Berkman.

He's got 7 with 1 out left to use and here come the Gold Balls, the Century 21 Gold Balls.

And he wastes no time in hammering that one to right center and he's tied Lance Berkman for first with # 8.

Deep to center...does he have the lead with #9?....NOOO, just short of the center field wall. A good performance by Justin Morneau who was a last minute addition to the Home Run Derby but he's making the most of his spot as he ties Lance Berkman for 1st place.

His longest home run 459 feet for Justin Morneau...impressive. The longest of the night so far was a 478 ft shot from Lance Berkman to dead center.

Lance Berkman takes the lead

Lance Berkman will take his cuts here in the first round, but his first 2 swings haven't gotten it done...but # 1 is a blast about 20 rows up in the upper deck in right field. Berkman starts off hitting left handed, remember he is a switch hitter.

I talked about Berkman struggling in the Home Run Derby the past few times he's done it and it's holding true tonight. He's hit just 1 HR and is already at 6 outs.

Oh, there goes # 2 just clearing the right center field fence...

There goes # 3 into the upper deck and even higher up than his second.

Another one to the upper deck and way up there for # 4...Berkman is warming up

# 5 for Berkman, he's tied with Utley for 2nd place with 1 out to go. Can he get to # 6 and tie Sizemore and Uggla?

Deep into the upper deck for # 6, so we have a 3 way tie for 1st.

OOOOOOO...there goes # 7 and Lance Berkman has take the lead with another upper deck bomb!

WHOA!!! Deep to center, an absolute blast from Berkman for # 8.

That's where he'll finish, but what a finish for Lance Berkman as he puts on a show for the New York crowd. He's your leader, but we still have a few hitters left...Josh Hamilton and Ryan Braun still to come, but up next is Minnesota Twin slugger Justin Morneau.

Here comes Chase Utley, time to heat things up!

Phillies' 2nd baseman Chase Utley steps up, the pick of a few ESPN guys including Joe Morgan and Chris Berman.

First swing, deep to right center but just not enough on it as it lands on the warning track.

ESPN has a camera shot just behind the guy that's throwing to Chase Utley and he's throwing a lot of balls inside that Chase can't turn on and isn't able to turn on. Could become a problem if he can't fix that.

There's # 1 for Utley to right field, but just got over the fence. I talked about Utley not being your prototypical home run hitter in this kind of competition and he's showing it. He's hit a lot of line drives that would be extra bases in a game, but won't get it done here.

Utley got enough of that one, off the facing of the 2nd deck for his 2nd of the competition. 2 HR's with only 3 outs left to use. Will he not even pass Longoria?

Doesn't look like Utley has enough tonight, a lot of line drives but not what this competition calls for.

There's # 3 for Utley, but again just barely clearing the right field fence. He's not getting a lot on those balls.

Down to his final out, let's see what he does with the Gold Ball.

# 4 for Utley, to the deepest part of the park, just clearing the center field fence. Maybe Utley is warming up.

There goes # 5 into the upper deck in right, so he's passed Longoria and he's 1 short of Uggla and Sizemore who both have 6.

Did he get # 6?!!....No, just short of the warning track and will finish his first round with 5 HR's, let's see if that's enough to advance.

Evan Longoria up next

Evan Longoria, unlike Uggla and Sizemore, doesn't hit his first swing for a HR...but he does with his 2nd to dead center. Impressive power from the first timer.

Can you imagine what Longoria is feeling right now? Yankee Stadium, in front of 60k - 70k people plus a few million watching from home. No pressure kid!

1 HR and already with 7 outs used already, too much pressure on a young kid to perform on a stage like this.

He may have gotten this one...and he did just around the foul pole in left field for # 2. That has to feel good.

Uh oh, is he getting on a role? # 3 into the upper deck in left, he's warming up.

3 HR's and just 2 outs left to use, he has to get to 6 if he's going to have a chance of getting into the 2nd round.

Just missed # 4, but it wouldn't have been good enough anyway. Sizemore is showing off.

There goes # 4 for Sizemore and another upper decker...Size is showing his guns, not a bad start.

Here goes another upper deck shot from Sizemore, # 5 on the night, 4 of those shots into the upper deck in right field. 5 HR's and 2 outs left to use....

OOOOOOO...how about Sizemore...what a blast that was to right center and the deepest part of right center! HOLY COW! Where did Size come from, what a blast for # 6.

Sizemore just missed passing Uggla as his last swing sailed just wide of the right field foul pole.

So both Grady Sizemore and Dan Uggla are tied after their first round with 6 HR's a piece. Stay in your seats ladies and gentlemen, we haven't even gotten to the big boys yet tonight.

Lance Berkman, Josh Hamilton, Chase Utley and Ryan Braun still yet to take their swings.

Here we go...Dan Uggla will start things off

Dan Uggla, 2nd baseman from the Florida Marlins will get things started in this 2009 Home Run Derby and takes his 2nd pitch deep to left center for his first HR of the competition.

How about a dead center shot for Uggla, man that didn't look like it wasn't going to leave. Shows the power that Uggla has to get that ball out.

The last 3 he's hit he's gotten too far under...looks like he could be trying too hard.

Oh, there's # 3 absolutely crushed. Upper deck shot for Dan Uggla, that ball was hammered.

# 4 for Uggla, down the line wrapping around the left field foul pole. Not a bad start for Uggla. The third one he hit he knew it right off the bat, absolutely crushed.

He's getting under the ball again just a little as that one falls just short of the warning track in left.

Four HR's on 8 outs so far for the Marlins' 2nd baseman. He needs a few more if he hopes not to be passed.

# 5 for Uggla, a moon shot but landed about 10 rows deep in left field.

The balls he makes contact with he's hitting really high and a few of them are just hanging, so he's got 1 out left to make something happen.

Just as I spoke, there goes a gold ball for # 6 for Uggla up near where the Baseball Tonight crew was doing their show and are watching from.

So Dan Uggla finishes his first round with 6 total HR's so we'll see if that holds up. Nothing that really knocked my socks off or made me jump out of my seat, but we've got a long way to go.

Major League Baseball to have a year round network

Just announced during a commercial break on ESPN, MLB will have their own year round, nothing but baseball, network starting on New Year's day 2009. Who would have thunk that?

Brett Favre is coming out of retirement? You don't say...

According to reports, Favre has asked the Green Bay Packers for his release so he can sign with another team and make his return to the NFL. Please tell me noone is surprised at this turn of events. Did anyone honestly think Favre was going to stay retired?

I don't know about any of you football fans, or sports fans in general, but Favre needs to stay retired. You don't make a speech like he did in front of the media, and then just a few days later, start dropping hints that he wasn't retiring after all. Does anyone consider this move a stab in the back to the Green Bay Packers? Somehow, I don't, because it's high time that the Aaron Rodgers era begin in Pack Land and I think they'll do very well with the young kid at the helm.

The question now becomes, who needs a QB? Could the Oakland Raiders possibly make a phone call to the Favre camp? Maybe the 49ers? Who else is out there that needs an aging, past his prime, QB?

I'm curious of the scenarios you NFL, or sports, fans see and where you see the future Hall of Fame QB landing. So send me your ideas and opinions, I'm curious to hear what you have to say.

Until then, Brett, please stay retired and don't embrass yourself. You have your Super Bowl rings, you're a lock for the Hall of Fame...it's time you step aside. I'm sure Fox would love to have you on board calling games on Sunday, at least you'll still be a part of the game...just from afar.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://allsportsview.blogspot.com/2008/07/brett-favre-coming-out-of-retirement.html' title='Brett Favre coming out of retirement? What happened?

Now, here we are just shy of the All Star break and there isn't one team with a winning record. What happened to the strength, the depth that all these teams were supposed to have?

Arizona, who currently leads the division at this point, still has a reason to be buyers at the trade deadline and the name that has come up is former Diamondback, and current Padre, Tony Clark. Clark isn't getting much playing time in San Diego with Adrian Gonzalez currently occupying the 1st base spot and, barring injury, isn't going to relinquish it any time soon. Could Tony be headed back to Arizona and how much of a boost will it give this young team?

On the flip side of the coin the San Diego Padres, who currently bring up the rear in the division, are most likely going to be sellers. The talk is that pitchers Randy Wolf and Greg Maddux could be on their way out, also rumored to be on the move is Brian Giles. The Yankees have expressed interest in left-hander Randy Wolf but Wolf has expressed interest in staying with the Padres. As for Maddux, there have been rumors that he's headed back to the Chicago Cubs or back to where he became well known...to the Atlanta Braves. The Padres are not looking for anything more than prospects back in any deal they make before the deadline, already waving the white flag and basically saying "we'll try again next year."

Will this division get back on its feet? Doubtful, but one can only hope.

C.C. Sabathia still getting a lot of chatter in the trade rumors

I think a lot of us know this was inevitable, especially since the two sides couldn't come to an agreement on a contract extension. Indians' left-hander C.C. Sabathia could be on his way out of Cleveland if the team decides to trade him and there are a lot of teams who are already lining up if the Indians officially decide to unload him.

Teams like Milwaukee, the Dodgers, Yankees and a few others I'm sure are going to be putting together trade packages as the trade deadline gets closer. Out of those three teams, only the Dodgers and Yankees can afford to give Sabathia the kind of money that he's looking for. The question remains, will Cleveland hold out for the best possible deal and pull Sabathia off the market if they don't get it, or will they take the best offer they think they will get for him and part ways?

The trade deadline comes up at the end of this month, so I'm sure the rumors will heat up as the weeks go by. Stay tuned...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://allsportsview.blogspot.com/2008/07/cc-sabathia-still-getting-lot-of.html' title='C.C. It was absolutely an incredible moment for the entire city of Fresno, something that will definitely help them in recruiting as well as put them on the map...officially.

Congratulations boys and we'll see you in 2009.

Welcome to The Sports View

Welcome sports fans to The Sports View, where you'll get my opinions and rants about everything from college to pro sports, but you'll have to put up with my Fresno State rants as well especially after their Cinderella run to the College World Series National Championship.

With the football season right around the corner, there will be plenty of time to talk about the Top 25 College Football polls and the upcoming NFL season.

We'll have a lot to talk about in the coming months, so sit back and enjoy it.
