I knew we'd see more upsets as the college football season rolled on this weekend, but the one game I didn't see coming was East Carolina's 24-3 thumping of #8 West Virginia, giving the Pirates their 3rd straight win over a ranked team dating back to last season. They started the 2008 season with an upset win over Virginia Tech last Saturday.
Then, Ohio State overcame a very slow start against Ohio University but ended up winning that game 26-14.
Another team, that looked like it was going to get beat at home, was Notre Dame. The Irish were at home hosting San Diego State, who had just lost their opening game against Cal Poly of all teams and the Aztecs led the Irish 13-7 into the 4th quarter. The Aztecs had a chance to put the game away for good but they would fumble the ball in the end zone on what looked like a sure touchdown. Notre Dame would turn that into a touchdown of their own to take a 14-13 lead and would add another touchdown late to avoid one of the biggest upsets of the weekend.
Another couple of teams who avoided being upset were #20 Wake Forest and #17 South Florida. Wake Forest needed a last second field goal to beat Mississippi 30-28. Mississippi had scored a go ahead touchdown with just a minute to go in the fourth quarter, but Wake Forest had just enough time to get into FG range to win the ball game. South Florida needed overtime to defeat Central Florida 31-24. Central Florida had tied up the ball game 24-24 but South Florida still had enough time to win with a last second field goal at the end of regulation, but kicker Delbert Alvarado would hook a 42 yarder wide and the game would go into overtime.
In a controversial ending, Washington was charged with excessive celebration on a touchdown that pulled the Huskies to within 1 of BYU. The Huskies were backed up 15 yards and their extra point attempt was blocked and #15 BYU would hold on for a 28-27 victory. That's a call that is going to be questioned around the water coolers come Monday morning.
It's been a fun season already and we're only 2 weeks in....what else could happen?
